Who Pays for Care, and Why It Matters
There are two distinct funding streams for care in the UK, and the difference between them can mean the difference between paying thousands of pounds or getting your care for free.
Local authority (means-tested) funding
If your care is funded by your local authority, your assets and income are taken into account. If you have savings or property above the threshold, you will be expected to contribute to, or fully meet, the cost of your care.
NHS funding (not means-tested)
NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) provides fully funded care for people with complex, unpredictable or intensive health needs, including care in your own home. It is not means-tested. Your financial position has no bearing on your eligibility. If you meet the eligibility criteria, the NHS pays.
The distinction matters enormously, , because one is free and one is not.
What Is NHS Continuing Healthcare?
NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is a package of care arranged and funded entirely by the NHS for adults in England who have a primary health need. It can cover residential care, nursing home care, or care in your own home.
Eligibility is based on the nature, complexity, intensity and unpredictability of your health needs, not your age, diagnosis, or financial position. Many families are never told this option exists. Others are told they don't qualify when a proper assessment would suggest otherwise. We help families to understand the assessment process and where they can go to for additional help.
